KERRY DAWSON, B.Sc, B.Ed, MRM

Kerry Dawson obtained an Honours B.Sc. in Ecology and Evolution from the University of Western Ontario in 1989, where she was named top student in her program in 1988. She was awarded National Science and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) scholarships to study for her Masters in Resource and Environmental Management at Simon Fraser University from 1990 to 1993. As a biologist, Kerry worked for BC Parks, GVRD Parks and for a variety of environmental organizations before beginning to work as a grizzly bear tour guide on the BC Coast in 1998. During these years she spent her winters learning Spanish and guiding language students on excursions around Mexico.

From 2004-2005 Kerry obtained her B.Ed. and teacher training through Simon Fraser University's Professional Development Program, and specialized as a high school math and science teacher. In 2005, Kerry travelled to Dalian, China where she spent two years teaching grade 10 math and science at Dalian Maple Leaf International School, a BC-certified offshore secondary school. She then re-located to Guatemala City where she taught grade 8 math, science and computer technology at the American School of Guatemala. Upon returning to the Comox Valley, Kerry began tutoring with local tutoring agencies including Sunrise Learning Centre, North Island College and School Is Easy Tutoring, where she was named "Teacher of the Year" in 2010.
Kerry founded Comox Academic Tutoring in 2011 and holds a current teaching licence.

A published writer and photographer, Kerry also displays her photographic art at venues around town, and creates video documentaries on local environmental themes. She is the designer of the Comox Valley Conservation Strategy's annual Conservation Calendar and has acted as an Education Outreach Consultant to them. She also plays the piano.

Kerry gains enormous satisfaction in helping students improve confidence and success in their academic pursuits. Students have said that she is patient, engaging, approachable, and skilled at breaking down difficult concepts into manageable and understandable pieces. With younger students, Kerry likes to use a wide variety of activities and games to make learning fun and hands-on. Kerry employs a wide range of resources, study guides, study skills and creative tools to help students learn to the best of their potential.
